Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings
Alan Milstein and CHIPS Surveyors are corporate members of the SPAB
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings was founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract the highly destructive ‘restoration’ of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects. Today it is the largest, oldest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage.
Alan says “my interest is to make sure that I can give the best possible advice to my clients who want to buy an old, cherished and historic home. It’s about balancing the needs of modern day living and of protecting a valuable and rare property. Understanding how an old building works is essential to ensuring it remains structurally sound and comfortable to live in.”
Residential Property Surveyors Association
Alan Milstein is Chairman of the RPSA
The RPSA is a nationwide professional association for specialist independent residential property surveyors.
Alan says “research shows that many home buyers experience difficulty in finding a good local independent surveyor. Our job at the RPSA is to promote the services of our members and to help them to deliver an above average service to their clients. Too often in the past both surveyors have been inconsistent and survey reports bland and of limited value. It’s time that changed and the RPSA is working hard to move the residential surveying industry into the 21st century”.
Press and Broadcasting
Alan Milstein is a regular contributor to trade and press publications, as well as featuring on nationally broadcast radio.
Alan says “for most people, buying a home is quite a rare event, perhaps once every 20 years. It’s no surprise, therefore, that it’s unfamiliar territory, and all too often interested parties within the process prevent home buyers from getting the comprehensive information they really do need. Through my press and radio presentations I hope to inform consumers about their rights and the need for them to ensure they get good advice throughout the house buying process”.Listen to Alan on the LBC Property Hour
Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors
Alan Milstein is a member of the FPWS
In 1997 the Government introduced party wall legislation across the whole of England & Wales in the form of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. It was recognised by a number of experienced practitioners that the shortage of surveyors available to administer this legislation had to be addressed and the Faculty was born out of this national need for education and support for surveyors but also to enhance awareness and provide advice and guidance to the general public.
Alan says “in attempting to clear up party wall legislation, the Government created an Act which many home owners find confusing and complicated. I believe in trying to explain it in simple terms so that those wanting to carry out works understand the process and the costs right from the beginning.”
